Absorption versus initiative on a five-minute chart
Two labels that get conflated in journals — and a classroom drill that forces you to pick one.
Absorption describes volume that arrives while price stalls — effort without travel. Initiative describes volume that accompanies directional progress and continues to support that direction on the next test.
The drill
We pause a replay at a busy five-minute cluster and ask each participant to write one word: absorption or initiative. Then we resume three bars. People who wrote initiative while price merely churned learn quickly how often journals flatter their first guess.
Language matters
If your notes say “strong buying” for every high-volume pause, you cannot later audit whether you mistook absorption for initiative. We insist on the narrower terms even when they feel pedantic. Pedantry is cheaper than a late chase.
